Sadaqa Food Bank is a community-supported, non-profit charitable organization in Ottawa, established in September 2007. It is uniquely recognized as the city's only Halal food bank, operating on weekends to serve individuals and families facing food insecurity. The organization provides free food items in accordance with Islamic dietary practices, ensuring all food is free from pork products and alcohol, and all meat is Zabiha (Islamically slaughtered). Sadaqa Food Bank's mission is to offer healthy food options to those in need across the Ottawa community, regardless of their religious, ethnic, or socioeconomic background. It aims to support over 1000 individuals monthly, classifying it as an X-large food bank within the city. The food bank distributes culturally appropriate and nutritious food packages, which have included items like chicken, rice, dates, and cooking oil, with a notable demand for dates, especially during periods like Ramadan. The organization relies entirely on donations of cash and non-perishable foods, collaborating with local community groups and grocery stores for food collection drives. Services are provided to all Ottawa residents who self-identify as needing food assistance, with specific requirements for first-time applicants including a valid photo ID, proof of address for every family member, and proof of monthly income. Returning clients need a food bank card, valid Ontario ID, an empty oil bottle, and a reusable grocery bag.
